Filmekimi: Another Reason to Love October

Organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV), Filmekimi’s 15th edition in Istanbul from 7-16 October. Filmekimi will be bringing cinephiles at several cities together with outstanding films. 

Filmekimi will once again present spectacular films which premiered at prestigious international film festivals and received numerous awards. Filmekimi’s 15th edition will feature the latest works of master directors such as Ken Loach, Asghar Farhadi, Jim Jarmusch, Park Chan-wook, Paul Verhoeven, Todd Solondz, and Pedro Almodovar, as well as young auteurs, and first-time directors.

Filmekimi will be holding screenings at Istanbul’s various districts, such as Beyoğlu and Atlas in Beyoğlu, Rexx in Kadıköy and City’s Cinemaximum in Nişantaşı.

This year Filmekimi will also draw attention with its special posters beside its rich programme. The posters designed with the concept “Autumn’s colour is Filmekimi” include faces of celebrated actors Juliette Binoche, Berenice Bejo, Angeliki Papoulia, Şebnem Bozoklu, Elijah Wood, Fırat Çelik and Berk Hakman assuming Filmekimi’s colour.

Starting Saturday, 1 October at 10.30, tickets for Filmekimi in Istanbul may be purchased from biletix.com.

Tulip members will once again be able to purchase their tickets early at up to 25% discounted rates this year. These priority discounted tickets can be purchased by Black Tulip members on Tuesday, 27 September, and by White,Red and Yellow Tulip members on Wednesday, 28 September, Thursday, 29September and Friday, 30 September.

Romanian cinema is on the rise and three of the best examples will be at the upcoming Filmekimi. The three Romanian productions in the Filmekimi programme are: Câini / Dogs, Bacalaureat / Graduation and Sieranevada.

Meryl Streep as the more ambitious than talented off-key soprano Florence Foster Jenkins will be at Filmekimi. As the most celebrated and most untalented soprano of the time in New York, Meryl Streep is already in talks for an Oscar nomination, which will be her 20th. To be noted that she has sung all the pieces in the film herself… Hugh Grant is also lauded as his wonderful comeback with the film. Florence Foster Jenkins’ director Stephen Frears is celebrated for his earlier work Philomena, Dangerous Liaisons, High Fidelity, The Queen, and My Beautiful Laundrette. Cannes sweetheart Xavier Dolan’s Grand Prix-winning latest film JUSTE LA FIN DU MONDE / IT’S ONLY THE END OF THE WORLD. Xavier Dolan’s adaptation from Jean-Luc Lagarce’s play, this family drama stars most celebrated actors of France– Marion Cotillard, Gaspard Ulliel, Vincent Cassel, Léa Seydoux & Nathalie Baye. Todd Solondz’s follow-up to 2011’s Dark Horse, WIENER-DOG stars Greta Gerwig, Danny DeVito, Julie Delpy, Ellen Burstyn, and Tracy Letts. Premiering at Sundance, WIENER-DOG tells 4 stories interconnected by a Daschund. A sequel of sorts to “Welcome to the Dollhouse,” WIENER-DOG is Todd Solondz’s angriest, most radical, and most pointed film to date. Please click here for the trailer.

Bruno Dumont’s Cannes title, MA LOUTE / SLACK BAY tells an absurd detective story. Starring Juliette Binoche, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Fabrice Luchini, and an amateur cast as the locals, the crime comedy is set in 1910s in a fishing village in Northern France. The best animation film in Cannes this year, MA VIE DE COURGETTE / MY LIFE AS A COURGETTE received a standing ovation, and garnered favourable reviews from critics and the audience as well. Written by Céline Sciamma, the writer and director of “Tomboy”, screened at Filmekimi in 2011, MY LIFE AS A COURGETTE is a naïve film with a dark atmosphere, guaranteed to conquer audiences of a wide range of ages. MY LIFE AS A COURGETTE debuted at the Director’s Fortnight sidebar at Cannes and went on to win the Best Film and Audience awards at Annecy. Please click here for the trailer.
